Lyrics

Sometimes you can’t do nothin’ wrong

Sometimes it just don’t pay to try

Sometimes the day goes like a song

Sometimes storm clouds beat the sky

You’re payin for the pleasure you’re payin’ for the pain

You’re payin’ for the fare that’s gonna take you there

But you can’t get off and you can’t complain

Sometimes you wake up in a room full of nothin’

Sometimes you wake up in Spain

You just ride the train

You just ride the train

Sometimes the girl’s got what you want

Sometimes you don’t know what she needs

Sometimes you just can’t get enough

Sometimes it’s just enough to bleed

That woman is an engine steamin’ down the main

Screamin’ down the track breathin’ down your back

You hear the clickity clack runnin’ through your brain

Sometimes the woman is a true companion

Sometimes the woman’s insane

You just ride the train

You just ride the train

Sometimes you can’t do nothin’ wrong

Sometimes you just can’t close the deal

Sometimes the day goes like a song

Sometimes you’re crushed beneath the wheel

Sometimes there’s nothin’ to loose

Sometimes there’s nothin’ to gain

But you know any day might go your way

So you get back up and you do it all again

Sometimes you wake up in a world full of summer

Sometimes it’s the pouring rain

You just ride the train

You just ride the train

You just ride the train just ride the train

It don't matter if you is it don't matter if you ain't

Sometimes love's about the ’tis sometimes love's about the t'aint

Sometimes love is for the strong sometimes love is for the faint

Love can make a saint out of a sinner or a sinner from a saint

Love's the sweetest thing there is love's the saddest curse I know

Makes you gamble in the sun lets you stumble in the snow

From a lover's warm embrace to a round of friendly fire

Love will leave you standing on the ground or dancing on a wire

So here we are caught in this world alone to roam

If love dropped breadcrumbs we'd all find our way home

We go walking in the dark we're left standing in the light

There's a flame without a spark there's an end without a fight

Running from the truth of dawn to the shelter of the night

Hiding from the very thing we seek and we seek with all our might

What can we say to each other that we haven't already heard

And why should it make the least bit of difference

If we're captivated by the words

I don't know there are mysteries I can't explain

They touch us like a private rain

They spark along the pathway like echoes in a well

Through gaps in a maze we can see clearly dimly

So we lay the armor down and we open up the doors

And we let each other in do we really know what for

Like the pictures in a book from a language we don't know

We whisper the secrets in stillness and home we all go

I wanna dance among the shadows in the city tonight

Bad cats truth is talkin’

Bad cats leave him alone

Bad cats midnight walkin’ the band and the heart of gold

I see water runnin’ through that vein

In the heart of the city ain’t noboby know their name

In the heart of the mama they be stolen’ away

In the heart of the babies they know nothin’ but a rainy day rainy day

Bad cats truth is talkin’

Bad cats leave him alone

Bad cats midnight walkin’ the band and the heart of gold

Oh the music plays like shotgun fire

Fire that comes with the words

And the brain make the music go higher

Too much time too much money

Too much floatin’ away

There ain’t no time ain’t no money

Ain’t no nothin’ but a rainy day rainy day

Bad cats truth is talkin’

Bad cats leave him alone

Bad cats midnight walkin’ the band and the heart of gold

I wanna dance among the shadows in the city tonight

Up in the moonlight is how we lay us down to sleep

Oh baby face is in a heap of trouble

Troubled everywhere

There ain’t a drop to drink

They speak but do not think

They think but do not speak

Bad cats truth is talkin’

Bad cats leave him alone

Bad cats the midnight walkin’ the band and the heart of gold

I wanna dance among the shadows in the city tonight

I still say hi every time I walk through the door

I listen for your footsteps coming to me 'cross the hardwood floor

It was a rough day at the circus the clowns were in a state

I'm sorry that I stayed away so late

There's a big moon tonight it always reminds me of you

I saw a shadow cross my doorstep and I wondered if my wish came true

There's no beggar with a deeper dream no horses in this song

I'm sorry that I stayed away so long

I thought I felt you near me when I woke up this morn'

In that place before the time starts at the breaking of the dawn

And it wasn't really sadness when I realized you were gone

Just a slow recollection of time moving on

Time can be a refuge

Time can be a thief

It steals each precious moment

And gives you distance for relief

The circus won’t be back this year

The clowns forgot the play

I’m sorry that I ever went away

I still say hi every time I walk through the door

And I listen for your footsteps coming to me 'cross the hardwood floor

The circus won’t be back this year

The clowns forgot to play

I’m sorry that I ever went away

I’m sorry that I ever went away

Reading by a bare bulb in a room that's filled with echoes

While the dog outside makes non-stop noise

At something in the moon

He says he knows its secrets I have asked but he won't tell me

Why his soul responds to lightning

And the singing of the loons

On this page the words are fuzzy

I have read this line three times

In this hollow house where no one lives

There's cobwebs near the floor

The dog has found a new love and I guess I'll find another way

To take the night and leave my mind as stranded as before

Where are you on this cold night

Are you staring at the moonlight

Sure gets dark out here darker without you

I sing 'til I'm dizzy the music keeps me busy

When the last notes fade away I find I'm singing them for you

Out on the horizon lies a flying frozen seagull

And I see the earth tilt crazy while I dream l'm flying too

He circles ‘round the moon above this house lost on the prairie

And I climb upon his wing and fly the lonely miles to you

But I'll wake up with the dawn, still slightly drunk and heavy-handed

Like a shipwreck in the bathtub like a broken old balloon

The day will turn to dark me and the dog commence our yelling

Sing crazy songs at midnight thumbing noses at the moon

Where are you on this cold night are you staring at the moonlight

Sure gets dark out here darker without you

I sing 'til I'm dizzy, the music keeps me busy

When the last notes fade away I find I'm singing them for you

This house mocks me in the nighttime

So I'll turn all the lights on

I just can't stand the darkness

I'll leave 'em burnin' dusk 'til dawn

Since you went away

I get spooked by every sound

So if you don't come back home

I'm gonna burn this house to the ground

I'll make a long term reservation

At the broken heart motel

It's in a garden spot location

It's only three doors down from hell

Since you went away

I've got no cause to hang around

So if you don't come back home

I'm gonna burn this house to the ground

I'm living in a house of mirrors

I'm living in a house of cards

Reflecting back the lonely hours

And it shudders when the wind blows hard

Once this house was soaked with love

Now it's drier than an August day

One match she'll catch

All my troubles gonna burn away

I can't afford to pay the mortgage

There's a lien upon my soul

Baby, you put me up for sale,

And I'm gettin' tired of bein' bought and sold

Since you went away

These walls are tumbling down

And if you don't come back home

I'm gonna burn this house to the ground

Somebody’s crying’ mercy somebody’s begging for peace

From the sweet warm wind blowing out of the south

Comes the promise of relief

Fragrance of tropical flowers floats

Through this frozen pine tree air

Skinny girls with brown skin wild orchids in their hair

Somebody's cryin’ mercy cryin' let me go let me go

To the coffee bean ports of Brazil the skull hot sands of Mexico

Somebody’s crying’ mercy it’s cold somebody’s closing their eyes

Dreamin’ the salt sea sprays spyin’ full sails on the horizon

Dutch sea captains and Portuguese sailors

Perfumed in tobacco and beer

You know they’ll be rich with the spoils

Of a thousand ports full of wine

And a scene of good cheer

Take a drink the rum is cool like fire behind your eyes

The snow disappears on this creaking pier

Beneath the lonely seagull cries

Somebody's cryin’ mercy in a desperate note in a trembling hand

Palm trees in the margin waving goodbye goodbye goodbye

Tappin’ on the tabletop swayin’

To the unseen sounds of a sultry rhythm band

I am off for the sun and the sky and the heart of the mama land

I am off for the sun and the sky and the heart of the mama land

Somebody walks the beach at midnight down

Where the big boats are tied

Somebody dines on mangoes and coconuts

Down by the ocean side

Put on a white linen suit put the black pearl in the ear

But there’s a knock on the door in this small winter house

That somebody never hears

Somebody's cryin’ mercy cryin' let me go let me go

And somebody's gone in a twinkling eye

To a land that's all his own

Somebody's cryin’ mercy cryin' let me go and somebody's gone

I can't touch bottom from here

I can see forever the water's crystal clear

The waves are rising the sky is surprisingly near

There is no shoreline no lighthouse no foghorn no slap of an oar

Am I in league with the sea

Am I imprisoned or am I where I wish to be

I simply float with the swell am I damned am I free

Matrix and fractals and wheels within wheels

I am part of what's coming and what came before

I can't touch bottom from here

The water's rising the sky is just a smear in my eyes

I see no angels no devils in sailor's disguise

No port of call no landfall no sea wall

Just like my brother my father my mother

Their sons and their daughters

We're all treading water
